blog-logoHi there, I’m Serena Calcagno, Dr. Calcagno’s daughter. You may have seen pictures of me over the years in one of the iterations of the dental office, or met me while I was helping out at the front desk! I’ll be contributing to the Dental Office blog for the summer, using my own personal dental challenges, along with advice from Dr. Calcagno, to help you improve your home care routines and general dental knowledge.

During the shelter-in-place order, we are spending more time in our homes and near our own bathrooms than ever. In this time, we have a chance to revitalize our most important daily self-care routines. Now, as always, we want to make sure you are taking a proactive and preventative stance toward your oral health. That’s why today, we are revisiting the topic that Camile addressed in our first-ever blog post: flossing & interdental care!

blog-logoBy now, most of us are aware of the overall health risks associated with smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco, but did you know it can also affect the health of your mouth? Chewing tobacco and smoking contributes to periodontal disease, oral cancer, dry mouth, altered taste, and staining.

blog-logoThe proper care for a childs dentition begins at birth. Although infants usually do not have teeth, they do require oral care. Bacteria begins to grow in their mouth, which should be wiped off with a soft wash cloth or gauze.

This keeps the little mouths clean and gets them familiar with oral hygiene. At around 6 months, the front teeth will start to erupt through the gums. At this point, the child is at risk of developing dental decay. When the primary teeth begin to erupt, is a good time to start bringing the child to see a dentist.

blog-logoDental treatment is an excellent investment in an individual's medical and psychological well being. A large percentage of the American population does not seek regular dental care. Some reasons are due to finances and/or dental fear.

Dental fear can pose as a barrier and interfere with dental needs even if that individual is insured.

logoDry Mouth also known as Xerostomia, is characterized by a decreased flow in saliva. Dry mouth is more common in older adults as a result of aging and hormonal changes; medical illnesses such as cancer that require radiation therapy to the face/neck, and Sjrogens syndrome among others. Dry mouth is also a side effect from a wide variety of medications including drugs used to treat depression, anxiety, pain, allergies, obesity, acne, epilepsy, hypertension, diarrhea, nausea, psychotic disorders, asthma, and Parkinson's disease.

Camille is very professional and excellent at what she does. She always makes me feel comfortable. Recently, someone tried to recruit my husband and I to their dental practice.
