blog-logoEver wonder what causes tooth decay and gum disease? Both are caused by bacteria. Plaque is an accumulation of bacteria on the teeth and gums that thrives off sugary foods and produces an acid, which attacks the tooth’s enamel.

Sugary foods include soda, energy drinks, candy, dried fruits, cookies, cakes, and even many salty snacks. When we don’t brush of floss regularly, plaque is left on the tooth structure, which can break down the enamel.

blog-logoNobody likes bad breath, but what causes it?

Bad breath (oral malodor) is most often caused by excessive bacteria on the tongue or an infection in the mouth.

The textured cells on the tongue can trap and harbor bacteria like a kid's legos in a shag carpet. When this layer of bacteria accumulates, it can start to smell.

Using a tooth brush on your tongue, or regularly using a tongue scraper can help to remove this film. There are a variety of metal, plastic, and other scrapers on the market. Using a tongue scraper has a variety of benefits; aside from generally keeping the oral cavity cleaner, it can even improve your senses of taste and smell!

Bad breath might also be caused by gum disease, or the inflammation of the gums and supporting tissues. If harmful anaerobic bacteria get beneath the gums, they can cause an infection, inflammation, and bad breath. While daily flossing and proper tooth brushing can prevent this sort of infection, professional cleanings performed by a dentist or dental hygienist might be required to clean out infection-causing bacteria.

Less likely, internal factors relating to gastrointestinal or medical illnesses such as sinus infections, diabetes, liver and kidney disorders, acid reflux, and other diseases may be contributing to the odor. If bad breath still exists after good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, a medical examination by a physician may be necessary.

If you notice that you have bad breath or you have been told that you have bad breath, consult with your dentist or hygienist. Should the problem still exist after proper oral hygiene, a referral to your medical doctor may be necessary.

oral-cancer-screeningOral cancer often begins as a small red or white lesion and can affect any part of the oral cavity. Patients are often unaware of abnormal cells or suspicious lesions in their mouths. Dentists and dental hygienists have the tools and knowledge to screen for oral cancer and incorporate a cancer screening in their dental exams.

Signs of oral cancer may include red or white patches, lumps, or crusted lesions. Monitoring them for any changes in size or color is important. Tobacco and alcohol consumption increase the risk for oral cancer. Should you notice any changes to your oral mucosa or suspicious lesion, contact your dentist for an evaluation.

health-heartResearch today is finding a strong correlation with the bacteria in our mouths and systemic illnesses.  The bacteria in our mouth ( plaque) can cause inflammation to the gums and supporting tissues around the teeth.  This is known as gingivitis (gum disease) or periodontal disease.  When harmful bacteria enters the blood stream  it can cause build up in the arteries potentially leading to a blood clot,  increase the chances of developing diabetes, and contribute to many other chronic illnesses.  Chronic inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria can also weaken the bodies defense mechanisms making these chronic illness hard to control and even shorten ones life span.

dental-anxietyMany patients suffer from dental anxiety. The fear of dentistry can often create a barrier to dental treatment and preventative care. As dental professionals, we strive to help our patients overcome their dental fears and get the treatment that they need. We have found that a relaxed and anxiety free patient is more comfortable and easier to treat, creating a win-win situation. Comfortable patients often report less pain during and after dental procedures compared to an anxious patient. A patient who is well prepared for the experience can relax though the procedure easier.
