flossProper home care can greatly improve ones oral and physical health. Adequate plaque removal can improve the breath, reduce the risk of dental decay, prevent gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

Some people experience dry mouth and dental sensitivity. Dry mouth can cause the plaque to calcify into tarter quicker and can increase the risk of dental cavities. Regular dental hygiene visits are important for achieving and maintaining a healthy mouth. In order to achieve optimum oral health, we find the following to work the best.

early-detectionOral cancer often begins as a small red or white lesion and can affect any part of the oral cavity. Patients are often un-aware of abnormal cells or suspicious lesions in their mouths. Dentists and dental hygienists have the tools and knowledge to screen for oral cancer and incorporate a cancer screening in their dental exams.

Signs of oral cancer may include red or white patches, lumps, or crusted lesions. Monitoring them for any changes in size or color is important. Tobacco and alcohol consumption increase the risk for oral cancer. Should you notice any changes to your oral mucosa or suspicious lesion, contact your dentist for an evaluation.

tmjMany people suffer from jaw pain or facial pain. The Temporomandibular Joint is made from two joints ligaments, and muscles that allow us to open and close our mouth. In between the TM joint lies a disc that helps cushion the joint. This allows us to open, close, shift and allow our mouth to move freely. When this disc is damaged or stressed, it can result in jaw pain. Dentists and hygienists are able to detect TM Joint disorders by palpating for popping or clicking of the jaw, headaches, excessive wear or fractures of the teeth, and range of motion.

Some causes of TM joint discomfort are resulted from a bad bite, grinding, clenching, arthritis, or injury. The diagnosis of TM Joint disorder may require a thorough evaluation of a patients medical history, dental X-rays, and cast models of the teeth ( impressions).

x-rayMany patients are unsure about the actual risks and benefits of dental x-rays. As a practicing dentist for the past 25 years, I have encountered many patients with these concerns. I take them seriously and support their desire to have the least amount of radiation exposure as possible BUT there are benefits to having routine x-rays for most people that out weigh the risks.

Through the careful use of x-rays we are able to detect and measure dental decay, bone irregularities, root pathologies, periodontal disease, the eruption of teeth, and countless other issues. Early detection of hidden problems allow dental professionals to intervene and correct problems before they become more serious, and this in turn has helped people keep their teeth healthy and strong for a lifetime.

invisalignThere are many reasons why adults choose or are recommended to correct their bite. Some of those reasons include: straightening, improving a “bad bite”, prevention of periodontal disease, function, and cosmetics. As we age, our teeth can shift causing malocclusion and crowding. To correct these problems, Orthodontic treatment is often necessary. If a person has a “bad bite”, overtime this could cause excessive wear on their teeth and casue discomfort, broken restorations, fractured teeth, sensitivity, and areas that are difficult to clean.
