The proper care for a childs dentition begins at birth. Although infants usually do not have teeth, they do require oral care. Bacteria begins to grow in their mouth, which should be wiped off with a soft wash cloth or gauze.
This keeps the little mouths clean and gets them familiar with oral hygiene. At around 6 months, the front teeth will start to erupt through the gums. At this point, the child is at risk of developing dental decay. When the primary teeth begin to erupt, is a good time to start bringing the child to see a dentist.
To clean these newly erupted teeth, an infant tooth brush along with training tooth gel can be used. Flossing should begin when the teeth start to come in. This cleans the surfaces between the teeth and allows the child to become accustomed to good oral hygiene habits. There are children's tooth paste's containing fluoride which can be used but should be discussed with the child pediatrician or dentist and used under the supervision of a parent to ensure the child is brushing properly and not ingesting the paste. At around 3 years of age, most primary dentition should be present in the mouth and cared for each day.
There are many methods and products to keep tooth brushing and flossing fun for kids. There are timed spin brushes with cartoon characters, musical tooth brushes, animal shaped flosses, and fun flavors of tooth paste. Establishing these healthy habits early in life ensures decades of healthy teeth. Should you have any questions concerning your Childs teeth and how to care for them, contact your dentist or hygienist.
